Beethoven is more alive than ever. His compositions are performed in orchestras around the world and their popularity goes beyond the limits of classical music lovers: the four notes that open his Fifth Symphony are known by everyone. Popular but never banal: Beethoven is recognized as a genius. To celebrate it properly, this book brings together two authors: a contemporary Brazilian conductor, João Maurício Galindo, and a French novelist from the early 20th century, Romain Roland. Both place Beethoven in his time, in his family, in his relationship with other musicians, with patrons, with the public, even with women. They show his idiosyncrasies, weaknesses and finally present us with a Beethoven with many facets, from a mythified, deified being, to a human being – of enormous dimensions, no doubt, but a human being like any of us.
