Both place Beethoven in his historical context, exploring his family, his relationships with other musicians, patrons, the public, and even women. They reveal his idiosyncrasies and weaknesses, ultimately presenting us with a multifaceted Beethoven – from a mythologized and deified figure to a human being of enormous dimensions, no doubt, but a human being like any of us.
